DuPont positions itself as South Sound golf hub

It’s all about golf in DuPont.

Where University Place found gold with the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay last year, the City of DuPont is planning to focus on the virtues of golf as it reaches out to potential visitors.

To that end, the city will host a “Call to Action” meeting with interested parties at 10 a.m. Monday, April 11, at DuPont City Hall.

It will be a “gathering of the minds,” said Diane Rice, DuPont tourism coordinator, and the goal of the meeting will be to begin developing DuPont as “The Home of Golf in the Pacific Northwest.”

“Our hope is to increase tourism and visitorship,” she said.

She said the meeting will focus on developing a golf-centered tourism program.

DuPont Mayor Michael Courts will begin the meeting, Rice said, by presenting his “vision and concept.” This will be followed by a question-and-answer session, after which attendees will be able to volunteer to serve on either an advertising committee or a committee that will develop “packages” of enticements from local businesses including restaurants, hotels, salons and such.

Rice said she expects that representatives from local golf courses will attend. These include Oakbrook in Lakewood, Chambers Bay, The Home Course in DuPont and possibly Eagle’s Pride, also in DuPont. Other courses will be welcome at the meeting, she said.

Representatives from the Washington State Golf Association and the Pacific Northwest Golf Association will also attend.
