KPLU fundraising reaches halfway point in $7 million quest

Supporters of the public radio station KPLU have announced that the group has reached the halfway point in an effort to preserve the station from being subsumed into the University of Washington station KUOW

Officials at both schools last November announced that the station, based in Parkland but with studios and a wide audience in Seattle, would be sold for $7 million, and the fundraising effort was begun after those officials agreed to sell the station to the group if sufficient funds could be raised.

A recent $500,000 listener challenge “pushed us over the halfway mark,” the group announced on its website.

The total Friday afternoon had reached $3,620,157.

“We’re in the homestretch,” the post stated. “We only have a little over 12 weeks left to raise the money to buy our license and become an independent radio station.”

The next community meeting concerning the project will be held in Olympia on Wednesday, April 13, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Heritage Room, 604 Water St. S.W.
