New Thurston County COVID-19 cases bring week’s total to 60

Thurston County reported 26 new cases of COVID-19 over the past two days, bring the week’s total to 60 so far.

On Thursday, 12 new cases of the disease were announced with 14 new cases on Friday. The cases over the two day period were in:

  • A girl between the ages of 0 and 9;
  • Three girls between the ages of 10 and 19;
  • Four men and five women in their 20s;
  • A man and two women in their 30s;
  • Two men in their 40s;
  • A man and three women in their 50s;
  • Two men in their 60s; and
  • Two men in their 80s.

In her latest Letter to the Community, Dr. Dimyana Abdelmalek urged Thurston County residents to stay connected digitally. She said in her letter, “the most common ways people are becoming infected is through travel, social gatherings, and from other people within their household.” The letter goes on to explain that people need to stay distant, wash their hands and wear a mask.

Governor Jay Inslee announced rollbacks on safety measures throughout the state on Thursday:

  • Mask wearing is now mandatory in all common spaces,
  • restaurants’ indoor seating will now only serve five members of the same household, indoor seating is limited to 50 percent capacity at all times, bars and restaurants will have to stop serving alcohol at 10 p.m.
  • While weddings, funerals and spiritual services are allowed to continue at either 20 percent occupancy or at a max of 30 people, wakes and receptions are not.
  • Gyms can only be at 25 percent occupancy and small class will be capped at 10 people.

Of the 545 people diagnosed in the county since the first case was announced on March 11, 308 are considered “recovered” or “recovering” by Thurston County Public Health and Social Services. The cumulative total of hospitalized COVID-19 patients is 44 while the amount of people have died from the disease is at six.

IN THE REGION

  • Pierce County on Thursday reported 117 new cases of COVID 19 with no deaths and on Friday announced 115 new cases with no new deaths. The county’s total is at 4,227 cases and 104 deaths.
  • Lewis County on Thursday discovered six new cases, one patient was under the age of 20, two were in their 20s, two were in their 40s and one was in their 50s. On Friday the county reported four new diagnoses, two were in people in their 20s and two were in their 40s, none of them were hospitalized. 149 people in the county have tested positive and 3 have died.
  • Mason County reported on Thursday three more people had tested positive for the disease: one patient was in his 20s, another in his 30s and one in her 60s. Friday the county reported 12 new cases bringing the county’s total to 110 cases with one death.
  • Grays Harbor County reported no new cases on Thursday or Friday. 65 people have been diagnosed in the county and one has died.

AROUND THE STATE, NATION AND WORLD

  • Washington State’s Department of Health is reporting 50,824 people in the state have tested positive for COVID-19 and 1,495 have died from it.
  • In the U.S., there are over 4 million cases of COVID-19 being reported and 145,184 deaths stemming from it, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
  • Globally, more than 15.6 million people have tested positive for the disease and 636,752 people are reported to have died from it.
