Thurston County passes 700 COVID-19 cases with 9 added Wednesday

Over 700 Thurston County residents now have been diagnosed with COVID-19 since the first case was reported on March 11, health officials announced Wednesday.

Thurston County Public Health and Social Services announced nine new cases of the disease on Wednesday. Those who tested positive are:

  • A girl between the ages of 10 and 19 years old;
  • Two women in their 30s;
  • A man and a woman in their 40s;
  • Two men and a woman in their 50s; and
  • A woman in her 60s.

The nine new cases brought Thurston County’s overall case total to 708. Of all those who have been diagnosed, 536 are considered by the county as “recovered” or “recovering,” meaning they have been released from public health isolation.

The total number of county residents who have been hospitalized at some point for treatment went up by one to 57 today. According to a Tweet from Thurston County Health, two people have been hospitalized for COVID-19 treatment in the last seven days.

On Tuesday, it was announced a man and a woman had died of COVID-19 in Thurston County. The woman was in her 70s and had preexisting health conditions and the man was in his 40s without preexisting health conditions. The man is the youngest county resident to die from the disease and, of the 10 residents who have died, the only one who did not have preexisting conditions.

As of Aug. 3, 23,235 COVID-19 tests have been administered in Thurston County. Between July 28 and Aug. 3, 4.9 percent of those tests came back positive.

In the region

  • Pierce County reported 56 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday and no new deaths. A total of 5,278 residents have been diagnosed with the virus in the county and 119 people have died from it.
  • Lewis County announced three people tested positive for the disease: a person under the age of 20 and two people in their 20s. As of Wednesday, 201 people have tested positive in the county and one has died. The county also reported 18 people had recovered from the disease, bringing the total recoveries to 88.
  • Mason County discovered five new cases, bringing the case total to 201 with one death. The county considers 44 cases currently active and has 3 people hospitalized outside of the county for treatment.
  • Grays Harbor County reported an additional death attributed to COVID-19 on Tuesday. It now has reported 101 cases.

Around the state, nation and globe

  • Washington state’s Department of Health reports there have been 59,379 cases of COVID-19 since the outbreak began in the state and 1,619 people have died, as of Thursday.
  • In the U.S., nearly 4.9 million people have tested positive for the disease and 159,841 people had died from it as of Thursday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
  • Globally, 18.9 million cases of the disease have been reported and more than 710,00 deaths had been attributed to it, as of Thursday.
