Thurston County COVID-19 cases jump by 23 Wednesday to a total of 1,252

Thurston County COVID-19 cases continue to increase, with county health officials announcing 23 more cases on Wednesday.

The new cases included five people in their 30s, three people in their 20s, two males between the ages of 10-19 and one boy 9 or younger, Thurston County Public Health and Social Services announced.

County Health Officer Dr. Dimyana Abdelmalek said many of the recent cases are associated with travel, particularly out-of-state, along with household spread and spread between family and friends, The Olympian reported Tuesday.

The county’s 23 cases increased the overall total to date to 1,252. Of those, 990 have recovered or are recovering, 92 have been hospitalized at some point during their illness, and 17 have died, the data show.

The county is also still dealing with a COVID-19 facility outbreak at one adult family home.

In the region

Pierce County on Wednesday announced 64 cases and two more deaths, giving the county a total of 7,933 cases and 176 deaths. The two deaths were both from Tacoma: a man in his 80s and a man in his 50s, both of whom had underlying health conditions.

Lewis County reported nine new cases for a total of 560 and four deaths.

Grays Harbor County announced 15 new cases Tuesday night for a total of 525 and 10 deaths.

Mason County reported no new cases on Wednesday for a total of 430 and four deaths.

Around the state, nation and world

The state Department of Health on Wednesday reported 480 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and two deaths, giving the state 87,522 cases total with 2,126 deaths.

In the U.S., nearly 7.3 million cases have been reported and more than 207,000 have died as a result, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Globally, more than 34.1 million cases have been reported and more than 1 million people have died, the data show.
