The Mason County Sheriff’s Office and Coast Guard searched Wednesday for a man who went missing in his kayak in North Bay near Allyn.

The Kitsap Sun reported that two boats were anchored Tuesday night near the Port of Allyn. About 11:45 p.m., Andrew Aldrich told a man in the other boat that he needed to get some tools on shore.

Aldrich was wearing dark green Carhartt gear and no life jacket when he paddled his yellow kayak about 300 yards to his destination but didn’t return. The other man called 911 about 1 a.m., and the sheriff’s office called the Coast Guard at 1:30 a.m.

The Coast Guard arrived at daybreak with a helicopter and two boats. About 9 a.m., the helicopter crew spotted the kayak capsized on the beach less than a mile from the boat, off Grapeview Loop Road. A paddle was found nearby.

The Coast Guard suspended its search Wednesday afternoon

Deputies found the man’s truck and one boat anchored in the area. Investigators on Wednesday weren’t sure whether the missing boat was Aldrich’s or the other man’s.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Coast Guard at 206-217-6001.
