How you can help asthma sufferers this Fourth of July

Fireworks may light up the sky on Fourth of July, but they can also cause spikes in air pollution.

The Olympic Region Clean Air Agency says it has tracked elevated levels of fine particulate matter air pollution at many of its monitoring stations during previous Independence Days. In some cases, levels reached moderate air quality for more than a day after the holiday.

While smoke from fireworks displays generally dissipates in a few hours, people with asthma or other respiratory conditions may be impacted for days.

The clean air agency recommends limiting use of personal fireworks, which concentrate smoke near ground level.
