About 45 racing boats — including unlimited hydroplanes and flat bottom race boats — are expected to compete in the Black Lake Regatta this weekend.

Spectators can watch the races from Evergreen Shores resort at 7540 Lakeside St. SW. Gates will open at 8 a.m. and the races will run from about 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, according to organizer Jim Codling.

Admission is $10 a day, or $15 for both days, per person.

Black Lake is fairly protected, and that means boats can reach higher speeds on its 1.25-mile course, Coddling said.

In 2010, Shockwave Racing’s GP-17, owned by Olympia’s Rick Bridgeman, set a world-record average lap speed of 116.129 mph, according to The Olympian archives.

“It holds more world records than any other lake in the United States,” Codling added.
