Away at War: A Civil War Story of the Family Left Behind: The story of one such family has now been captured in "Away at War: A Civil War Story of the Family Left Behind" by local author Nick K. Adams. A retired elementary school teacher, Adams is an avid Civil War re-enactor and historical speaker. 3-4:30 p.m., Lacey Timberland Library, 500 College Street SE. What’s Blooming in Budd? Stream Team has partnered with Pacific Shellfish Institute to collect water quality and plankton samples in Budd Inlet. Participants assist in collecting water samples and measuring temperature, salinity and other water quality parameters. Samples are then viewed under a field microscope to identify algae and plankton. 1-2 p.m. Thursdays through Sept 21. Port Plaza, near Anthony’s in Olympia.

Aug. 12

Ride for the Dogs Poker Run: Help shelter dogs with 125-mile motorcycle ride through Mason County. Starts at JR’s Hideaway in Belfair. Sign-up is 8 a.m. to noon with first riders out at 10 a.m. Riders $15 and passengers $5. Sign up the day of the event or register online before Aug. 6 to receive a free event patch, an extra door prize ticket and GPS coordinates. Remaining patches will be sold for $5 at the event.
