Thurston County temperatures could reach record highs this week — here’s how to stay cool
Temperatures in Thurston County are predicted to reach record highs this week, which prompted a heat advisory from the National Weather Service on Monday morning.
The advisory, which will remain in effect from noon Monday to 10 p.m. Tuesday, warns of possible heat-related illnesses, and cautions residents of the greater Olympia area from spending long periods of time outside.
Monday’s temperatures in Olympia could reach as high as 91 degrees, before dropping into the high 50s late in the evening. Tuesday temperatures in Olympia are expected to reach 95 degrees — which would break the record-high set on Sept. 5, 1973 (91) — before cooling off in the evening.
Areas of smoke from wildfires burning across the northwest are expected to arrive Monday afternoon and linger until Wednesday.
Thurston County has several local sites — some of which also accept pets — where people can go to stay cool, and also offers tips on its website on how to prevent heat-related illness and injury. Updates to this information can be found on the county’s Facebook page.
