A popular trail that zig-zags its way to the state Capitol Campus — also known as the Heritage Park Hillside Trail — will close Tuesday for trail maintenance and some key erosion control work.

Users of the trail have taken shortcuts over the years, which has killed vegetation and increased soil erosion, according to the state Department of Enterprise Services, which manages the trail.

Crews on Tuesday will place boulders and native plants at each of the trail switchback corners. Other steps include cable strand fencing and adding piles of tree and shrub branches to block shortcut areas.

Erosion control features were added to the trail in April and it proved successful in reducing “trail cutting” behavior.

Enterprise Services encourages users to stay on designated paths.
