Fallen Pierce County deputy lived in Yelm and had Grays Harbor ties
A Pierce County Sheriff’s deputy who was fatally shot late Sunday while responding to a home invasion in the Frederickson area near Graham had lived in Yelm, and had previously worked for the Hoquiam Police Department.
Deputy Daniel McCartney, 34, had served the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office since 2014. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, and was married with three children, according to a Facebook post from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.
He was a Hoquiam Police officer for six years, according to KXRO.
“Dan was a good guy and a good police officer,” Hoquiam Police Sgt. Jeff Salstrom told the radio station. “More importantly he was an extremely devoted dad.”
McCartney was killed after deputies were called to a home in the 5100 block of 200th Street East for a home invasion at about 11:30 p.m. He suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma. He died just after 2 a.m., The News Tribune reported.
On Monday morning, numerous law enforcement and fire agencies turned out in support of McCartney on social media.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Pierce County Sheriff’s Office as they seek justice and peace for their Deputy killed in the line of duty,” Thurston County Sheriff’s Office posted on Twitter. “It’s a terribly sad day for law enforcement everywhere.”
