After Lacey police raised concerns about collisions and congestion on Yelm Highway, the city’s public works department is now recommending that speed limits on the portion of the road that runs through Lacey be reduced to 35 miles per hour from 40 mph.

The city’s transportation committee met Wednesday to discuss the proposal.

“This speed limit change will also add consistency to the area with Ruddell Road Southeast and College Street Southeast having posted speed limits of 35 miles per hour,” the transportation committee agenda said.

However, before the proposal takes effect, it must come before Lacey City Council for approval. If the council approves the reduction in speeds, it is expected to cost the city about $2,000 in materials and labor to change the speed limit signs.
