The occupants of a home that caught fire in Chehalis Wednesday night were able to escape unharmed, but two pets died in the fire on the corner of Southwest 12th Street and Southwest Cascade Avenue.

The first report of the fire came in about 9:54 p.m. Wednesday, according to Chehalis Fire Chief Ken Cardinale. The first units on the scene arrived to find the house about 50 percent consumed by the fire, and requested more firefighters after sounding a second alarm.

Units from the Chehalis Fire Department, Riverside Fire Authority, Lewis County Fire District 5 and Lewis County Fire District 6 responded.

The occupants escaped through the rear of the home, according to Cardinale, but one dog and one cat died.

The damage to the home is estimated at between $50,000 and $75,000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
