Fire in Capitol Forest contained, but cause still under investigation

The cause of a fire that broke out in Capitol Forest near Olympia on Monday morning is still under investigation, according to officials from the Department of Natural Resources.

Crews responded to the fire at about 8 a.m. Monday morning, and it reached 8 1/2 acres before it was contained at about 4 p.m. that afternoon, spokesman Nick Cronquist said.

The fire was initially reported to be about 10-15 acres in size. Reports of smoke near Tumwater prompted several emergency calls.

A helicopter could be seen throughout the day ferrying water to the fire from Summit Lake.

Investigators have determined the fire was human caused, Cronquist said, but its source has not yet been determined.

No injuries or property damage were reported.
