Dog dies after fire starts in shed and spreads to residence
A dog died and a residence was destroyed by fire early Thursday, according to Lacey Fire District 3.
About 5:30 a.m., Lacey fire crews were dispatched to a single-family home in the 8600 block of Skokomish Way Northeast. When crews arrived, the fire was well under way and flames were showing, Battalion Chief Pat Harn said.
The larger fire was knocked down quickly, but crews remained on scene to put out smaller fires, he said.
Harn said crews encountered a number of debris piles.
The cause of the fire still hasn’t been determined, but Harn said it started in a shed where the dog lived, then spread to the house and its eaves, bedroom and the attic. He said the residence is a total loss, estimating damages at $100,000.
Although the dog died from a combination of burns and smoke inhalation, the residents escaped the fire in time, said Roy Macmenigall, Jr. He said Friday that he was in the house, along with his wife, infant girl and his father.
