The state has a date: Marvin Road overpass lane reductions, detour begin Tuesday

The work to transform the Marvin Road Interstate 5 overpass into a diverging diamond interchange will begin to affect traffic Tuesday evening, according to the Washington state Department of Transportation.

The state initially estimated the planned lane reductions and detours would begin Monday. Now, the state has pushed it a day to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

This is what to expect: the Marvin Road overpass will be reduced to one lane in both directions. If you’re traveling south on I-5 and wish to exit at Marvin Road, you won’t be able to turn left on to Marvin. Instead, traffic will be diverted to Hogum Bay Road, Willamette Drive Northeast and then back to Marvin.

If you’re headed north on Marvin Road and wish to exit on to Hogum Bay Road, you won’t be able to do that either. That traffic will be detoured to Willamette Drive.

Instead of exiting at Marvin Road, the state Department of Transportation is asking drivers to consider exiting in Nisqually at Exit 114. They also ask that motorists travel early in the morning or later in the evening, and to consider rescheduling discretionary trips.

Lacey drivers will have to be at their most patient this summer, not only because of major road construction projects in the northeast area of the city, but also in the southeast as well.

The Marvin Road overpass work is expected to last through early June. In southeast Lacey, drivers will have to contend with two construction projects on College Street.

The first project on College, which will begin in late April or early May, will widen the street between 18th Avenue Southeast and 25th Avenue Southeast and add a roundabout at 22nd Avenue Southeast. That work is expected to last until fall 2020.

The second project, also set for this summer, is a resurfacing or “overlay” of College Street between 37th Avenue and Rainier Road Southeast.
