Lacey seeks applicants to fill council vacancy after Young announces she will resign
Lacey City Council member Rachel Young, who already announced she would not seek re-election, now has decided to resign from the council at the end of the month.
Young’s last day is April 30. To fill her Position No. 3 seat, the city will accept applications through April 26. Those interested in being appointed to the council can pick up an application packet in person at Lacey City Hall, 420 College St. SE, or fill it out online.
The Olympian was unable to reach Young for comment Tuesday.
Applicants must currently live within Lacey city limits — not the urban growth area — and must have lived in the city at least a year. They also must be registered voters.
Applicants will be interviewed in public by the City Council on May 7 in Lacey council chambers. The council likely will appoint an applicant the same day. That’s the same process that Young went through when she was appointed to fill the seat left vacant by former councilman Jeff Gadman. Gadman went on to become Thurston County Treasurer.
The council job pays $1,525 per month.
The successful applicant will have to decide whether to run in this year’s election.
Some already have shown interest in running for her seat, according to state Public Disclosure Commission data.
Ed Kunkel Jr. and Lynda Zeman have announced they are running. PDC data also show that Jesse Orndorff is exploring a run for the same seat.
