North Thurston High School locked down when assault suspect runs toward campus

North Thurston High School was briefly locked down Monday morning after a man, following a fight, ran toward the campus, according to Olympia police.

The high school was locked down for about 10 minutes, said Courtney Schrieve, spokeswoman for North Thurston Public Schools.

About 10:50 a.m. Monday, Olympia police were dispatched to the Safeway gas station on Martin Way East after a report of a fight.

Once there, police learned that a 29-year-old man had entered the gas station convenience store and began acting erratically, Lt. Paul Lower said.

The man was asked to leave the store, and did, but began assaulting a Safeway employee outside the business near the gas pumps.

The suspect stopped momentarily for police at the scene, then fled toward the high school campus. He assaulted a police officer there before being taken into custody, Lower said.

The 29-year-old was booked on suspicion of felony and misdemeanor assault.
