Mother, son and aunt hatched plan to rob convenience store in Thurston County

Call it an inside job.

A woman who worked at an area convenience store, her son and a woman who referred to the son as a “nephew” were arrested Sunday after they hatched a plan to rob the woman’s employer, charging documents show.

All three were booked on suspicion of first-degree robbery.

According to charging documents:

The plan included what to wear (mask, sunglasses ), what to bring (BB gun) and this detail: cash registers capable of holding $1,700.

The fake robbery unfolded about noon Sunday at the store in the 9300 block of Martin Way East. The 21-year-old son presented a note and gun to his 38-year-old mother, received cash, then left in a vehicle being driven by the 37-year-old aunt.

A witness was able to share license plate information with Sheriff’s deputies, who later stopped the vehicle in the 8500 block of Pacific Avenue Southeast.

The aunt was taken into custody, but the son grabbed a red bag out of the vehicle and started running toward 8535 Pacific Ave. SE. He eventually complied with orders to stop. The bag contained the cash.

After the aunt and nephew were in custody, a deputy went back to the store to question the mother at the convenience store. She was asked to participate in a field identification.

She responded that she didn’t recognize her son — the suspect had “darker skin color” — and denied any involvement.
