Garage destroyed by fire near Yelm

A Yelm area garage was destroyed by fire early Tuesday, according to Southeast Thurston Fire Authority.

Fire crews were dispatched to the 12800 block of 133rd Avenue Southeast about 4:30 a.m., where they found the garage, which is attached to the house, on fire and flames were showing, Chief Mark King said.

Crews were mostly able to keep the fire from spreading to the main residence, he said, but the home did sustain some light smoke damage.

There also were reports of “popping” sounds during the fire, but crews could not confirm the source of the noise, he said.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined, but a small heating device was found in the garage, King said.

Bald Hills Fire Department, East Olympia Fire District 6 and Lacey Fire District 3 also responded to the blaze.
