Shelton man who died in hit-and-run crash Sunday night has been identified

Brian D. Prouty of Shelton died Sunday night when he was hit and killed by a van on U.S. 101, according to the Mason County Coroner.

About 8 p.m. Sunday, Washington State Patrol troopers say the van was headed south on U.S. 101 at milepost 342 when it struck Prouty, 53, walking in the same direction on the shoulder of the road.

The Mason County Sheriff’s Office located the van about 3 a.m. Monday on a road not far from the scene of the crash, Chief Deputy Ryan Spurling said. The vehicle was turned over to the State Patrol to aid in their investigation, he said.

The driver was still at large Monday, Trooper Chelsea Hodgson said.
