Winter’s ‘king tides’ in the forecast this week for Olympia

King tides, unusually extreme high tides that can produce flooding in downtown Olympia, are predicted this week and in early February, the city of Olympia has announced.

King tides occur when the sun and moon align, resulting in an increased gravitational pull on the earth’s oceans, according to the city.

A king tide combined with heavy rainfall can result in flooding. Snow and rain showers are in the forecast this week.

The following are the predicted king tides in Olympia:

  • 8:53 a.m. Tuesday, 16.7 feet.
  • 9:32 a.m. Wednesday, 16.7 feet.
  • 10:12 a.m. Thursday, 16.5 feet.
  • 7:35 a.m. Feb. 11, 16.5 feet.
  • 8:09 a.m. Feb. 12, 16.6 feet.
  • 8:46 a.m. Feb. 13, 16.5 feet.
