Thurston deputy shoots and kills man after man pulls out knife
A Thurston County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man early Tuesday after the man pulled out a knife during a struggle, a department spokesman said.
About 5:30 a.m., the deputy was dispatched to the 7800 block of Mountain Aire Drive Southeast, just west of Marvin Road off Pacific Avenue Southeast, after a report of a court-order violation, Lt. Ray Brady said.
Brady didn’t know the specific type of court-order violation, but said it was an “enforceable order that prohibited contact.”
The person who called 911 knew the man who had shown up at the home. Brady would not disclose details of their relationship.
The first deputy on the scene encountered the man outside the home. He confronted the man, and the situation escalated, so the deputy used his Taser. Then the man “produced a knife,” Brady said, and the deputy shot him.
Other deputies did not arrive at the home until after the shooting, Brady said. The man died at the scene, he said.
Other details about what led to the interaction between the man and the deputy were not immediately known, Brady said.
The deputy, who was not injured, has been placed on paid administrative reassignment, Brady said. The deputy has worked in law enforcement for more than six years, he said.
A five-county team of law enforcement officials will now investigate the incident. The investigation will be led by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, he said.
