1 stabbed, another injured when fight erupts in downtown Olympia Sunday night
One man was stabbed and another injured Sunday night after an argument triggered a fight that involved about a dozen people, according to Olympia police.
Both men were taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Lt. Paul Lower said. A man in his 30s was stabbed in the abdomen; the other man, thought to be in his 40s, suffered a cut to his hand that required stitches.
The argument and fight began about 7 p.m. in a parking lot at Washington Street Northeast and State Avenue.
According to Lower:
A group downtown was serving pizza to the homeless when the man in his 30s began to argue with those getting food.
That argument escalated into a fight, with participants throwing pizza at each other. The man in his 30s picked up a bicycle and threw it at the group, injuring the man’s hand.
The fight then spilled into the intersection.
Police believe two men ultimately tackled the man in his 30s and one of them stabbed him.
One of the suspects is described as a white man, 5-foot-10, with tattoos on his neck. He was last seen wearing black clothes, a beanie-style hat and riding a red bicycle.
A number of people in the area at the time called 911. But once police arrived, most ran off, Lower said. Police were able to stop a few to interview them about the incident.
State Avenue was closed for about an hour, Lower said.
