Tofu Hut to close for a month for transformation, new cantina opens in Hawks Prairie
Tofu Hut, the popular Asian fusion restaurant in Lacey, has decided to close for one month and re-emerge with a new name and focus, according to a note on the door.
The note addressed to customers says the business will be closed this month, but plans to reopen March 1.
“The business will still be under the same owner and layout of the restaurant won’t be changed,” the note reads.
What will change is the name, which is not disclosed, and the new focus on mostly Japanese cuisine. The owner says some popular Tofu Hut items will stay on the menu.
This isn’t the first time the restaurant at 4804 Pacific Ave. SE has been through a transition.
Soo Kim opened the business in 2009, with assistance from her mother, Sunny Kim.
The Kims sold the business in 2015 on a lease-to-own basis, but the new owners eventually closed the restaurant in August 2016. The Kims returned to clean, remodel and repaint, choosing a darker interior color that gave the space a homey, cozy feel, The Olympian reported in December 2017.

The business, which first opened in 1985 as Crains Office Products Inc., needs to modernize to stay relevant, Seals said. Seals went to work for the business in 1985, then bought the business in 2010. It is the only independent office supplies business in the area, he said. About a year ago, the business changed its signs and logo, Seals said.
