Man hit and killed by train in Lewis County Thursday

A man was hit and killed by a train in Napavine Thursday, police say.

The Napavine Police Department responded to the pedestrian-versus-train accident about 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Washington Street railroad crossing, according to a news release.

A southbound Amtrak train was approaching, railroad crossing arms were down, and crossing lights were on when two men tried to cross the tracks, the news release reads. The first man made it across and the train hit the second man, who died at the scene.

Police Chief Chris Salyers told The Olympian the Lewis County Coroner has asked the department not to release any information about the man who died.

Napavine officers are investigating the death and are not considering charging the other man involved at this time, Salyers said. Officers have contacted the man and are interviewing witnesses. There’s no video surveillance of the area, he said.

Other agencies that responded to the incident include BNSF Police Department, Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, and Fire District 5.

Included in the news release from the Napavine Police Department is this public safety note:

“When the crossing arms are down or the lights are on, please do not attempt to cross the tracks. These signals are for both pedestrians and vehicles.”
