SUV T-bones school bus in Tumwater Friday morning

An SUV failed to yield at a stop sign and T-boned a special needs school bus carrying three students Friday morning in Tumwater, police say.

Just after 8 a.m. Friday, police believe the driver of a Jeep drove through a stop sign on Grant Street Southwest at North Seventh Avenue Southwest, said Lt. Jen Kolb, and the Jeep hit the bus on the driver’s side.

The three students, a bus driver, and an aide aboard the bus were not injured, Tumwater School District spokesperson Laurie Wiedenmeyer told The Olympian. However, the driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries and was transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia “out of an abundance of caution,” Kolb said.

North Seventh Avenue was closed in both directions until about 9:30 a.m., according to Kolb.

Wiedenmeyer told The Olympian the students’ parents were contacted immediately, and that there was some damage to the bus but the driver was able to drive it from the scene.

“The kids were just a little bit late to school, but they went on with their day,” she said.
