Mason County deputy fatally shoots woman trying to run him over with vehicle
A Mason County Sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a 32-year-old woman after she reportedly tried to run the deputy over with her vehicle Tuesday night, according to law enforcement.
The woman who died was Kathryn R. Hale, who lived in the Shelton area, according to Mason County Coroner Wes Stockwell. Stockwell told The Olympian Hale’s next of kin have been notified and an autopsy is planned for Thursday.
Thurston County Sheriff’s Office is leading the ongoing investigation into the incident by the multi-county Region III Critical Incident Investigation Team (CIIT).
According to Thurston County Sheriff’s Lt. Ray Brady, a Mason County deputy went to a house near Mason Lake about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday to contact the woman, who was wanted on “multiple felony warrants.” The office did not release the crimes for which she was wanted.
The Mason County deputy was on foot in the driveway to the house when the woman — who The Olympian now understands to be Hale — attempted to run him over with her vehicle, according to Brady. During that time, the deputy fired his weapon.
She drove off and, after a short pursuit, deputies and EMS rendered aid, according to the Mason County Sheriff’s Office. The woman died while being taken to Mason General Hospital in Shelton.
The deputy sustained minor injuries from being hit by the vehicle, according to Brady.
Thurston County Sheriff’s Office will provide updates on the investigation at least once per week via social media, Brady said. Once the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Mason County Prosecutor.
