Car-versus-dump truck crash in west Olympia sends man to hospital
A 42-year-old man was injured and taken to an Olympia hospital after driving head-on into a dump truck at a busy intersection on Olympia’s west side Tuesday evening, police say.
According to witness statements, the man was driving a Honda passenger car on U.S. 101 about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday when he exited to Black Lake Boulevard Southwest at what police presume was a high speed and failed to navigate a left turn southbound, Olympia Police Lt. Paul Lower told The Olympian.
The man’s Honda then struck the dump truck, which was at a stoplight waiting to turn left onto 101, according to Lower. The Honda’s driver sustained a non-life threatening leg injury and was transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital.
The driver of the dump truck was not injured and there were no passengers; both vehicles were significantly damaged and towed from the scene, Lower said.
Police closed the intersection for at least 20 minutes, according to Lower, until enough emergency personnel were on scene to redirect traffic around the accident.
The case is under investigation, and the driver of the Honda is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to Lower Police had not booked the man as of Wednesday morning because he was receiving medical care for his injuries.
Olympia Fire Department also responded to the scene.
