Optical lab in Lacey cuts 78 jobs, state says
VSPOne Olympia, an optical lab in Hawks Prairie, has temporarily laid off 78 employees, according to the state Employment Security Department.
The state received a worker adjustment and retraining notification from the business on April 9 and the layoffs took effect on April 10, state information shows.
The job cuts likely are tied to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced businesses to close, operate in new ways, or cut jobs due to drops in demand for products and services.
A representative of VSPOne Olympia could not be reached Tuesday. VSPOne Olympia is in the 8700 block of Commerce Place Drive Northeast.
Although hundreds of temporary layoffs have been announced throughout Puget Sound since the outbreak, the VSPOne Olympia cuts appear to be the first significant layoffs in Thurston County — at least according to the state.
Other regional temporary layoffs:
▪ Seattle: Pacific Northwest Ballet, 733 layoffs.
▪ Various locations: Oki Development Inc. (golf course operator), 416 layoffs.
▪ Seattle area: YMCA of Greater Seattle, 2,222 layoffs.
