Man, 22, arrested for felony assault after fight on Cooper Point Road

A 22-year-old man was arrested Sunday afternoon on suspicion of felony assault after a fight in west Olympia, according to Olympia police.

About 2 p.m., the 22-year-old man and a woman approached another man with a dog in the 1300 block of Cooper Point Road Southwest. They were upset because the man with the dog was in their panhandling spot, Lt. Paul Lower said.

They argued over the spot, followed by a struggle over a sign the man with the dog was holding.

His dog then allegedly bit the woman, which set off a wider fracas in which the 22-year-old man pulled out a pocket knife and began to swing it at the other man.

That action was witnessed by many on Cooper Point Road. Multiple 911 calls about a man “swinging a knife,” triggered a large police response to the area, Lower said.

Police were on scene for about 40 minutes, he said.

The 22-year-old was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault.
