The warmest days of the year so far are expected to happen this weekend in the Olympia area, according to the National Weather Service, bringing unseasonably nice weather for Mother’s Day.

Temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 70s on Friday and reach 80 degrees Saturday and Sunday, said National Weather Service meteorologist Jacob DeFlitch.

But what are we supposed to do with all that warm weather during the COVID-19 pandemic?

More than 100 state parks are set to reopen this week, plus fishing, hunting and golfing are allowed as of Tuesday. But Gov. Jay Inslee urge residents to practice social distancing as they head outdoors.

In Thurston County, 112 people have had confirmed cases of the coronavirus after two more cases were announced over the weekend.

Although it will be warm this weekend, temperatures are not expected to break any records, DeFlitch said.

The record for May 8 is 87 degrees, which was set in 1987, he said. The record for May 9 is 85 degrees, also set the same year. The record for May 10 — which this year is Mother’s Day — is 87 degrees, set just last year.

Until the weekend, the weather pattern will be unsettled, DeFlitch said. The Olympia area can expect a mix of sun breaks and rain, with the most precipitation falling Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

Overnight temperatures will be in the upper 40s, he said.
