Part of Chehalis Western Trail closed during the day this week for tree removal

A section of the Chehalis Western Trail near Chambers Lake will close during daylight hours for three days this week so a contractor can remove hazardous trees, according to Thurston County Public Works. The section of the trail that will be closed reaches south from the Chambers Lake trailhead.

Specifically, the contractor will remove trees that are at the end of their life cycles and prune others back from the trail, Parks and Trails Manager Kerry Hibdon told The Olympian Wednesday. County Parks and Trails staff plan to work with volunteer groups to plant new trees of a longer-lasting, more stable species in that area in the near future.

Between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, the trail will close to public use between 14th Avenue Southeast and 21st Avenue Southeast, according to Public Works.

Thurston County manages 22 miles of the Chehalis Western Trail, which runs north-south and connects with the Yelm-Tenino Trail near Rainier.
