Driver of semitrailer dies on I-5 near Grand Mound Wednesday

The driver of a semitrailer died on northbound Interstate 5 near Grand Mound Wednesday, Washington State Patrol says. Preliminary information suggests the man may have experienced a medical emergency.

Washington State Patrol responded to a semitrailer that had driven off the roadway at exit 88 about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Trooper Ryan Burke told The Olympian. The truck hadn’t crashed, Burke says, but had rather stopped near the road. No other vehicles were involved.

Aid arrived and performed CPR for “quite awhile” before confirming the man had died, Burke said.

Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock told The Olympian the incident appeared non-traumatic and that the man may have had a medical issue. Burke said State Patrol is investigating the crash, but that no foul play was thought to be involved.

Neither State Patrol nor the coroner’s office could provide the man’s city of residence Thursday, but confirmed he was 52 years old.

The exit ramp was closed about 12:30 p.m. so the truck could be towed, Burke said, and a detour was still in place as of 1:30 p.m.
