Olympia man transported to hospital after crash on I-5 near Pacific Avenue Thursday

An Olympia man was transported to the hospital with serious injuries after a multiple-vehicle crash on I-5 southbound near Pacific Avenue mid-day Thursday, State Patrol says.

About 12:30 p.m., State Patrol responded to the crash between mileposts 106 and 107, Trooper Ryan Burke told The Olympian. It involved four vehicles: a van, a Honda passenger car, a pick-up truck with a trailer, and a semitrailer.

A 74-year-old man from Olympia who was driving the van is thought to have caused the crash, Burke said.

Troopers believe he was in the far right line when he suffered a medical emergency and swerved left, striking the middle barrier. The other vehicles were “caught up in the collision trying to avoid the van,” a tweet from Burke reads.

The man was transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia with serious injuries, and Burke says he was undergoing surgery Thursday afternoon.

Nobody else involved in the crash was transported for medical care, Burke said.

The roadway was partially blocked for nearly three hours following the crash, according to a State Patrol press memo.
