Capital Lakefair postponed because of COVID-19; no food row or parade this year, organizer says
Update: Capital Lakefair has now been canceled, first vice president Karen Adams-Griggs said about 5 p.m. Tuesday. She said the carnival operator has pulled out, and without a carnival, the summer festival will not happen. An official statement is expected soon, she said.
The annual summer celebration known as Capital Lakefair has been bumped back to August from its traditional July time frame because of COVID-19, the organization announced over the weekend.
Lakefair is now set to take place Aug. 19-23.
“This modification will put the event safely in Phase 4 (of the governor’s plan) which includes a return to public interactions, all recreational activity and gatherings of more than 50 people with appropriate distancing and sanitary precautions,” Lakefair officials said in a statement.
Although the fair has been postponed to August, some events are not happening, first vice president Karen Adams-Griggs said Tuesday.
Food row on Water Street, Senior Day, and the grand parade have been canceled, she said.
What is happening? The carnival, sales of arts and crafts and Adams-Griggs said they are going to push for the fireworks show.
“We want to put something on for the community,” she said.
