Olympia house total loss after catching fire early Wednesday

A house off Sleater Kinney Road Northeast that caught fire early Wednesday morning is a total loss, according to the Olympia Fire Department.

The department believes the house was unoccupied, and firefighters were able to stop the blaze before it spread to adjacent buildings.

About 4:45 a.m. Wednesday, Olympia firefighters wer dispatched to the area behind the Jack in the Box at Sleater Kinney Road Northeast and Martin Way, Assistant Chief of Operations Mike Buchanan told The Olympian.

Firefighters arrived to find a one-story house on the 4000 block of San Mar Drive Northeast “well-involved” with visible flames threatening adjacent buildings.

It appeared the house was being renovated and was unoccupied, Buchanan said. There were no reported injuries.

A single-family home on the east side of the house was singed by the fire, but firefighters were able to stop it from spreading and extinguished the fire before an adult family home to the west was in any danger, according to Buchanan.

The house is a total loss, Buchanan said, and estimated damage at $270,000. The department was investigating the cause of the fire Wednesday morning.

Olympia Fire Department responded to the blaze with four fire engines, one ladder truck, two fire medic units and a Battalion Chief, according to an OFD news release. Lacey Fire District 3, Tumwater Fire, McLane Black Lake Fire, South Bay Fire and East Olympia Fire responded as mutual aid.

Sleater Kinney Road Southeast was closed at Martin Way East for more than an hour, Buchanan said.
