Woman shot while exchanging gunfire with state trooper on I-5 in Chehalis
A woman was shot in the jaw while exchanging gunfire with a Washington State Trooper Tuesday night on southbound Interstate 5 in Chehalis, according to the agency investigating the incident.
About 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, a trooper saw the woman standing or sitting near the guardrail along the freeway near milepost 70 with no vehicle nearby, said Jason Dracobly, Chief Deputy of Investigations with Mason County Sheriff’s Office, the investigating agency.
After the trooper pulled over to check on her, Dracobly said, the woman pulled out a gun and the two exchanged fire.
The woman was shot in the upper jaw, Dracobly said, and the trooper provided first aid before she was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where she was under guard receiving care as of Wednesday morning.
According to a Washington State Patrol news release, the trooper took cover behind his patrol vehicle and suffered minor scrapes.
Dracobly described the woman as an “adult,” but did not know her age.
The roadway was closed for about 6 hours while the on-scene investigation was completed, according to WSP.
Mason County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the incident by the regional Critical Incident Investigative Team (CIIT).
