A fast-moving fire that burned up a mobile home in Rochester overnight resulted in the death of its elderly resident, according to West Thurston Fire Department.

In the minutes before midnight, firefighters responded to neighbors’ reports of smoke and flames in the 18600 block of Hilt Street, a dead-end road off U.S. Route 12.

The fire moved quickly and spread to a storage shed and two other small structures on the property, according to Captain Lanette Dyer, public information officer for West Thurston Fire.

The resident who died was identified as a 79-year old man.

Fire Department Investigators were still on scene around 11:30am Friday while small flames continued to burn.

East Olympia Fire and Southeast Thurston Fire Authority provided mutual aid, as well as fire departments from Lewis and Grays Harbor counties.
