6 more COVID-19 cases gives Thurston County 19 for the week, 238 overall

Thurston County announced six more cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, giving the county 19 new cases for the week and 238 to date overall.

The new cases were a man and woman in their 70s, a woman in her 40s, a woman in her 30s and a man and woman in their 20s.

Those ages 20-29 now account for 17 percent of the overall number of confirmed cases, the county data show.

“In the last four weeks, we have seen more young adults testing positive for COVID,” county acting Health Officer Dr. Diana Yu said in her letter to the community this week. “Younger people can get very sick, too, and recovery is not an easy process. There may be lifelong complications. Prevention is always better.”

Of the 238 cases, 212 people have recovered or are recovering, 32 have been hospitalized, four have died and there have been two congregate care setting outbreaks.

Those outbreaks have been reported at Olympics West Retirement Inn in Tumwater and Infinite Care Adult Family Home in Lacey. The congregate care setting data also shows “one ongoing.”

Public Health Director Schelli Slaughter explained Saturday that “one ongoing” does not mean an outbreak at a new location, but that Olympics West continues to be an “ongoing” situation.
