Firefighters respond to fire at Lacey homeless camp Tuesday
Fire destroyed what is believed to be one person’s campsite at a homeless camp in Lacey Tuesday afternoon, according to Lacey Fire District 3.
About 1:30 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the camp in the area of Martin Way and Desmond Drive, Deputy Chief Jennifer Schmidt told The Olympian, after multiple callers reported visible flames and a column of smoke to Thurston County 911 dispatch.
A wildlife officer arrived first on the scene, Schmidt said, and reported a homeless camp was fully engulfed. Fire crews estimated the area was about 30 feet by 50 feet in size and contained tents, a mattress, and at least two propane tanks.
People who live in the area said the site was inhabited by one person, Schmidt said, but that person was not at the scene and crews did not make contact with them. The cause was unknown as of Wednesday morning.
No injuries were reported, and the fire did not appear to have spread to any other sites, according to Schmidt. The scene was cleared by 2:19 p.m.
