Shelton man under investigation for hit-and-run crash that injured 2 in Mason County
Washington State Patrol is investigating a 30-year-old Shelton man for hit-and-run after a crash injured two people riding a motorcycle near Grapeview in Mason County Wednesday afternoon.
About 4:30 p.m., State Patrol believes the man was driving a car south on State Route 3 at about milepost 15 when he swerved into the northbound lane to avoid crashing into stopped southbound traffic. According to a WSP press memo, traffic had braked ahead of him to allow a vehicle to turn left onto Grapeview Loop Road South.
A 58-year-old man from Belfair was driving a motorcycle on SR 3 north at the time and lost control as he tried to avoid colliding with the swerving car, according to the memo, ejecting him and his passenger, a 61-year-old woman also from Belfair.
The man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for medical care and the woman was transported by ambulance to St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor, according to the memo. Both were wearing helmets.
The Shelton man was uninjured and fled, but was later located by a Mason County Sheriff’s Deputy and escorted back to the scene, according to the memo.
No arrests were made at the scene and the investigation was ongoing as of Thursday morning, according to Trooper Chelsea Hodgson. Once complete, investigators will refer charges to the Mason County Prosecutor’s Office.
