A train derailed in Centralia late Sunday afternoon, according to police, and local streets could be blocked for days.

Centralia police say the freight train derailed in the area of North Tower Avenue and Fifth Street just before 5 p.m. Sunday.

A spokesman for Puget Sound & Pacific Railroad said the train derailed as it was leaving the rail yard at a slow speed.

“All of the derailed cars are empty, except for one loaded grain car,” Michael Williams said.

No one was injured and no hazardous materials were released as a result of the derailment, according to police.

Police say North Tower Avenue and B Street could be closed for up to three days.

Williams said the cause of the derailment is under investigation.
