21 more COVID-19 cases on Saturday gives Thurston County 566

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 continue to rise sharply in Thurston County after 21 more cases were announced on Saturday.

The additional cases, as of Saturday, give the county 81 for the week and 566 to date, according to Thurston County Public Health and Social Services.

The weekly total will be released about 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Of the 21 new cases, all were 50 or younger, including 10 people in their 20s. Those ages 20-29 now account for 125 cases, or 22 percent of the overall total, the highest number of cases for any age group in the county, the data show.

“As our case numbers rise, please follow the new guidelines meant to slow the spread of COVID-19,” said Thurston County Health Officer, Dr. Dimyana Abdelmalek, in her letter to the community last week. “I ask you to support your friends and neighbors by following these measures. I know when we all keep our physical distance, wear face coverings, wash our hands frequently, cover our coughs, and avoid social gatherings, we can reduce our case counts and work towards a safe return to public life.”

Of the 566 cases, 308 have recovered or are recovering, 44 have been hospitalized at some during their illness, six have died and there have been two congregate care setting outbreaks at Olympics West Retirement Inn in Tumwater and Infinite Care Adult Family Home in Lacey. Both no longer have an ongoing COVID-19 situation, according to the county.
