Man struck and killed by train near Nisqually Thursday

A man is dead after being struck by a train near Nisqually Thursday morning, Thurston County Sheriff’s Office said.

Just before 8 a.m., BNSF Railways employees reported a man had walked onto the tracks ahead of a southbound train near the St. Clair Cutoff Road overpass in the Nisqually area, Sgt. Roland Weiss told The Olympian.

The employees reported the man was yelled at to move and that the train wasn’t able to stop in time, according to Weiss. The man died at the scene.

He was the only person in the area, according to Weiss. An investigation is ongoing, and Sheriff’s detectives were still on the scene Thursday morning.

Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock confirmed his office was at the scene, as well, on Thursday. He said the man’s identity was not yet available.

The tracks are BNSF territory, and the company is helping with the response and investigation, BNSF spokesperson Courtney Wallace wrote in response to The Olympian’s questions. However, the train involved was a Union Pacific train.

Union Pacific special agents also will investigate the incident, according to UP spokesperson Tim McMahan.
