Reminder: Marvin Road overpass in Lacey will be completely closed this weekend

If you live in northeast Lacey and envision a trip to Costco this weekend, you’ll have to find a new route to get there.

That’s because beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, the entire Marvin Road overpass will be closed so crews can convert the overpass to a diverging diamond interchange.

The overpass and the Interstate 5 exits will be shut down, except that the northbound Interstate 5 exit 111 on-ramp to the Quinault roundabout will remain open.

The state Department of Transportation is asking “travelers to consider alternative routes,” department spokesman Doug Adamson said. He said congestion at the on-ramp to Quinault is expected to increase greatly during construction.

Crews will create the intersection over the weekend. WSDOT hopes to have the project completed by 5 a.m. Monday.

The new interchange is expected to accommodate growth in the area, as well as improve traffic flow and potentially reduce collisions, according to the state. By 2035, northeast Lacey is expected to be home to 13,000 people, 5,500 residences — single-family and multifamily dwellings — and 9 million square feet of commercial development, according to Lacey projections.
