The Evergreen State College closed a campus building this week after a “health-related” incident on Wednesday, a spokeswoman for the college said.

The college’s community activities building, or CAB — which is home to the college bookstore, radio station KAOS, and the college cafeteria — closed about noon Wednesday, spokeswoman Christine Hoffmann said.

She declined to discuss the specifics of the incident. The college has received no confirmation that the person involved has tested positive for COVID-19, she said. The CAB will remain closed until Aug. 10 so that it can be cleaned and decontaminated.

The closure affects students are still coming to class for summer instruction under a hybrid teaching model that combines classroom instruction with remote learning.

But students who don’t have to be on campus should stay home, Hoffman said. Visitors are discouraged from coming to campus.

Students and staff on campus must wear masks, observe social distancing and fill out an online health verification form. Anyone at Evergreen who feels like they may have been exposed to COVID-19 also has to fill out the form, Hoffmann said.

The COVID-19 outbreak was first reported in Thurston County in early March. Since then, there have been 743 cases reported here, according to county data. On Thursday, county health officials announced 35 new COVID-19 cases — the most cases ever recorded in a single day in the county.
