Rollover in south Thurston County near I-5 Wednesday morning sends man to hospital

A 21-year-old man was injured and cited in a rollover accident Wednesday morning in south Thurston County near Interstate 5, the Sheriff’s Office says.

The man was driving a 2007 Kia Optima southbound on I-5 just after 6 a.m. when a Sheriff’s sergeant noticed the vehicle speeding, Lt. Ray Brady said. At one point, it hit 20 miles per hour over the speed limit, he said.

As the driver approached the exit to 93rd Avenue Southwest, the sergeant switched on his lights to conduct a traffic stop, Brady said. But the car launched off the off-ramp, hit a downed light pole, and ultimately landed on its side on 93rd, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The driver claims he didn’t see the sergeant’s lights behind him, Brady said, and that he was in a hurry because he was late for work, and failed to negotiate the off-ramp. He suffered minor injuries and was transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia for evaluation.

He was the only person in the vehicle and was cited for no vehicle operator license, second-degree negligent driving, and speed too fast for conditions, Brady said.

The man’s Optima partially blocked traffic for about half an hour and was towed from the scene, according to Brady.
