Road work deadline looms for about 30 RV residents who call Deschutes Parkway home

Scheduled road work will begin on Monday on Deschutes Parkway and continue all week, blocking the area between Lakeridge Drive and the Fifth Avenue Bridge to all street traffic and parking until Aug. 28.

The area is a hub for vehicle and RV-dwellers.

About 30 vehicles remained parked along Deschutes Parkway earlier this week, according to Keylee Marineau, Thurston County’s Homeless Prevention and Affordable Housing Coordinator.

The Department of Enterprise Services, which manages the Capitol Campus, has been coordinating with vehicle residents since earlier this month.

The agency is “anticipating voluntary compliance to clearing the roadway,” wrote DES spokesperson Linda Kent in an email. On Friday, Kent said that DES staff along with Olympia’s Homeless Response Coordinator would check to see if any remaining vehicle residents had barriers to moving.

For vehicles remaining on Monday, Kent wrote that the Washington State Patrol would “provide enforcement if necessary on the day of the closure.”

The road work includes replacing expansion joints on both sides of the bridge south of Marathon Park, as well as streetscaping, repairs to light poles, and adding ADA access to the crosswalk near the Fifth Avenue dam.
